Jean combines teaching with a career as an artist, illustrator, painter and photographer, based in Hinesburg, Vermont. Design in nature, horticulture, landscapes and people are common themes found in her work with an emphasis on watercolor, gouache and graphite drawing. She teaches DRAWING AND PAINTING BOTANICALS in the Plant and Soil Science Department at the University of Vermont.
Illustration clients include magazines such as Horticulture, Fine Gardening, Vermont Life, Vermont Magazine, Garden Design, National Gardening, Harrowsmith Country Life, Women’s Day Gardening, The Herb Companion, Delta Airline’s SKY Magazine, and Eating Well, featuring artwork for articles, double page spread paintings, and how-to “spot” illustrations. Other work has been published in the books GARDENING FOR DUMMIES (IDG Books Worldwide), EVENING GARDENS (Chapters Publishing), THE FIBERARTS DESIGN BOOK, THE CONTEMPORARY QUILT and Vermont Life’s TWELVE SEASONS OF VERMONT. Her fiber art illustrations received awards from PRINT Magazine in the “Best of New England” category in their competitive REGIONAL ANNUALS, and in the NY Society of Illustrators’ retrospective book on American art, 200 YEARS OF AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION. Her photographs have received several first place and jurors’ awards in local, regional and international competitions.
Jean’s experience as a full time high school art teacher (South Burlington, VT), where she wrote curriculum for a fledgling program, contributed to a philosophy that serves as a foundation for her own and her students’ work, which is, to follow your curiosity, do independent research as a lifelong learner, and be observant in service to your art. She designed curriculum and taught a series of classes that combined art and science for College of the Atlantic’s Summer Institute for Teachers, (Bar Harbor, Maine), that included field trips in Acadia National Park and on their research vessel, the Osprey. She has taught Continuing Education courses for Rhode Island School of Design, the University of Vermont and many community programs.
Jean completed two years at the University of Vermont before attending and graduating from Rhode Island School of Design where she majored in Illustration with special interest in printmaking, photography and textiles. Visitors are invited to her studio by appointment to see original paintings, prints, drawings, illustration and photography.
